About Tarot Readings and how I approach them:
As with many things esoteric, I tend to think that Tarot gets a bad rap. Understandably so, when people look for answers to questions they may not really want the answers to, or they’re expecting a reader to divine a future over which they (clients) actually have free choice and personal control (generally speaking).
So here’s my take on the Tarot and how I prefer to offer it to clients.
The Tarot is a tool we can use to ascertain an Informed, Unbiased Perspective on a specific situation. Typically, people come to me with a question in mind. The cards do not answer their question in a yes or no fashion, or tell them to hold off on leaving their job because a promotion is coming, or to leave their girlfriend in three weeks to trek the mountains of Tibet. It just doesn’t work that way, at least not with me.
Through a process of card interpretation, deductive reasoning, spiritual guidance*, intuition and targeted questioning, we are able to more fully understand the forces surrounding a situation that may not be clearly evident to the individual living in the middle of it. (This is not surprising; it’s happened to me more often than I’ve realized, I’m sure!) These forces often have to do with personal motives, family considerations or simply unconsciously sustained blindness to certain factors. Sometimes, there are just karmic factors at work that are larger than the scope of our perspective or understanding.
Through the course of laying out the cards, we talk about what each one means and its relationship to others in the layout. I typically use the Celtic Cross layout of ten cards. When we’re done, we explore the cards in more depth to more fully understand the “story” being told. Often the first layout is just a “lay of the landscape” to inform us more about what we’re really “dealing with”. Then, we do a second layout (Celtic Cross again). This one alludes to outcomes of alternate courses of action, often linked to insights gained from the first layout. By this time, broader understanding of the situation has often brought a reduction in stress surrounding it and an “OK, I can deal with this,” kind of attitude. The third layout often confirms a chosen course of action, sometimes even providing glimpses of “road signs” to look for along the course of a solution.

Readings typically take somewhat more than an hour, but by the time the client leaves, she usually has an entirely new mindset about the situation, a sense of empowerment and some thoughts about first steps to take to effect movement and change for the positive.
* As with all of my work, I connect with my High Self and Spirit while doing a reading, which I learned to do most profoundly with SRT. Using a pendulum to guide questioning and conversations with clients has become an invaluable tool in this practice!
